Brattons First 100 Days: The Return of Broken Windows Policing and the Continuation of Ray Kellys NYPD
In a recent interview Commissioner Bill Bratton said that he has received no complaints from city council or from community leaders about the NYPD since he returned to office in 2014. Really? Brattons continued reliance on Broken Windows policing has led directly to the death of Jerome Murdough, and the criminalization of other homeless people throughout the city on whose mandate? Bratton has spearheaded an increase in arrests of panhandlers, acrobats, vendors and swipe seekers in the subway system on whose mandate? Bratton praised Ray Kellys Muslim surveillance program and announced that he would continue it on whose mandate? Bratton continues to support officers that assault, abuse or otherwise mistreat New Yorkers. He refuses to take a stand against police brutality on whose mandate? Through Vision Zero Bratton is targeting New Yorkers for minor traffic offenses, an outgrowth of broken windows that NYPDs George Kelling has described as the new frontier of pretext policing. Bratton has embarked on policing practices that target large populations of New Yorkers, a continuation of policies that criminalize and surveill people of color and point to an NYPD that has been rebranded--not reformed.
