Popular Sovereignty- the principle that the authority of the government is created and sustained by the consent of its people. Federalism- System of government Separation of Powers- an act of vesting the legislative, executive, and judicial powers of government in separate bodies. Checks and Balances- counterbalancing influences by which an organization or system is regulated Judicial Review- review by the US Supreme Court of the constitutional validity of a legislative act.

Limited Government- Political systems that legalized force is restricted through delegated and enumerated powers. Bill of Attainder- A legislative act pronouncing a person guilty of a crime; without trial and subjecting that person to capital punishment Elastic Clause- congress can only pass laws if necessary and proper Supremacy Clause- "the supreme law of the land" Writ of Habeas Corpus- the prisoner is brought to the court for the legality of the imprisonment to be examined. Ex Post Facto- with retroactive effect Due Process- fair treatment through the normal judicial system Expressed Powers- Powers written in the constitution Implied Powers- Powers implied but not written in the constitution

Full Faith and Credit- each state to recognize the public acts, records, and judicial proceedings of every other state. Privileges and Immunities- The first 8 amendments of the constitution Extradition- the action of extraditing a person accused or convicted of a crime. Republic- a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president
