Dividing shapes into equal parts.

What it is: Partitioning shapes is Common Core Math Standard 3.G.2: Partition shapes into parts with equal areas. Express the area of each part as a unit fraction of the whole. For example, partition a shape into 4 parts with equal area, and describe the area of each part as 1/4 of the area of the shape.

What we did: We practiced partitioning shapes into equal parts using geo-boards and graph paper. We also labeled the unit fraction for each piece. Sometimes, the students had to use division strategies to determine the area for each equal piece before partitioning.

How you can help: Have your child partition dinner, dessert, or any whole thing to share equally among family or friends. Then ask, What fraction of the whole is this piece?
