All Students

Due date: April 16, 2014

Solve the following when considering a chevron type thermal actuator made of isotropic poly-Si with a leg length, Lo = 750 m. 1) Plot the total displacement, !T, versus the legs length change, "L, for # = 1o, 10o, 20o, 30o, 40o, 50o, 60o, 70o, 80o, 90o. (# is the angle between L and Lo) 2) Indicate the transition from big to small values of "L on the last plot for each value of #. 3) Based on your results from the first two questions, what is the best value for #? Justify your answer. 4) Plot the coefficient of thermal expansion coefficient as a function of temperature based off the equation from the Okada, JAP 1984 reference. 5) Why is there not a constant temperature gradient across the length of the beam? Graduate Students (Extra credit for undergrads) 1) Give three examples of systems where a Duffing Oscillator might be used. These examples should make use of the jump phenomenon. Use the literature at your discretion; be sure to cite any article whose material you use.
