JUGAAD - THE INDIAN WAY

A Jugaad is grassroots innovation to deal with complex problem/situation. Management gurus call it "frugal engineering". A survey was done by Legatum Institute where 81% of Indian businessmen said jugaad was the reason for their success. Years ago, innovative Punjabis invented an ultra-cheap vehicle (not conform to vehicular regulations) by mounting irrigation pump on steel frame with wheels called jugaad. Dhirubhai Ambani was the master of jugaad. He exploited the system to overcome license raj which was a hurdle in his progress. The secret mission "X3" which is known as "TATA NANO" is the best example of jugaad. A recent case of Dr Pushkar Waknis, Pune based surgeon who used paper clips instead of textbook-prescribed Raney clips (Rs 40,000 a box) to keep the skin flap in place while operating. It was effective, easily accessible and also reduced the cost of surgery by around Rs 3000. Jugaad is the most precious resource for India.
