David Maxwell Ms. Randolf Diverse Perspective April 2, 2014 Color and Character Essay: Yellow. In Scott Fitzgeralds, The Great Gatsby, many colors are used to represent various meanings. One color in particular that signifies a deeper meaning in the novel is the color,

yellow. In Fitzgeralds, The Great Gatsby, the color yellow is used to symbolize both wealth and corruption, as well as to develop the characters Jay Gatsby. The lamp-light, bright on his boots and dull on the autumn-leaf yellow of her hair, glinted along the paper as she turned a page with a flutter of slender muscles in her arms. (17). Tom and Miss Baker sat at both ends of the couch and she read him this quote from The Saturday Evening Post. The quote represents wealth and its saying that rich people are beautiful and dont have a care in the world. On week-ends his Rolls-Royce became an omnibus, bearing parties to and from the city between nine in the morning and long past midnight, while his station wagon scampered like a brisk yellow bug to meet all trains. The Rolls-Royce is a high end car and is very expensive, only rich people could afford it. Also, the color of the car is yellow so again this represents wealth.

The lights grow brighter as the earth lurches away from the sun, and now the orchestra is playing yellow cocktail music, and the opera of voices pitches a key higher. (40). Now they are playing yellow cocktail music at this party and its a very fancy party so only rich people can be there. She held my hand impersonally, as a promise that shed take care of me in a minute, and gave ear to two girls in twin yellow dresses, who stopped at the foot of the steps. (42). While at the party, they were talking and then gave ear to two girls in yellow cocktail dresses. Again, they are at a nice party for rich people, and they must dress nice so an appropriate outfit for women is cocktail dresses. About three oclock the quality of Wilsons incoherent muttering changedhe grew quitter and began to talk about the yellow car. (156). Now finally this last quote someone gets hit by a car, and totally changes the symbolism of the color yellow. Myrtle gets hit by a car and the color yellow changes from representing wealth and prosperity, to destruction, and corruption.
