S5.8.1.

1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussion with diverse partners on grade five topics or texts, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. O- The students will participate in a novel study on the book, The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. M-Charlotte Doyle books -Journal prompt/vocabulary handouts -Writing utensils I- (listed in right column) E- The students will learn about the expectations of their participation in the novel study. The students will discuss what they already know about the novel and the time period. The students will read chapter one and complete the assigned journal prompt and vocabulary.

InstructionTW have students introduce themselves, since the group is blended from other classes. TW explain to the students how the novel study will work and what our time together will look like. TW explain that the students are to complete the journal responses and vocabulary expected from the corresponding chapters. TW ask the students if they prefer read aloud or independent reading. TSW respond by raising their hands for their preference. TW tell students they will be given a choice each day we meet. If three or more students want to follow along then the teacher will read aloud. TW ask students what they already know about Charlotte Doyle and the time period it is set in. TSW respond with answers from the building background lesson or facts that they knew prior to the lesson. After discussion TW explain that she will be reading aloud for today and that the students are expected to follow along. TSW follow along silently, while the teacher reads the book aloud. TW assign chapter one journal prompt and vocabulary as homework for the night. TSW repeat back to the teacher what is expected of them. TW dismiss the students to their original classrooms.
