Quick Shutdown Troubleshooting Guide 2

E, F, and G line projection televisions

Use the flowchart on page 3 to isolate the cause of shutdown to a section. Use the information below to find the specific cause of shutdown. Explanation of Sections Each section gives the test point(s) for three or four shutdown-monitoring circuits and lists the voltages for normal operation and shutdown. Once isolated to a section, measure each test point with a peakresponse meter to determine which monitoring circuit is triggering shutdown. Section one: The +15V, -15V and + 30V over current protects (OCP) monitor the current flow from the sub-power supply to the convergence circuit. The +30V over voltage protect (OVP) and +15V OVP monitor the outputs of the sub-power supply. If the output voltages increase, shutdown activates. Test Points + 15V OCP Collector voltage of Q759. +30V OCP Collector voltage of Q768. Normal operation is 0V. Shutdown activates at > 0.8V. - 15V OCP Collector voltage of Q762. Normal operation is 0V. Shutdown activates at > -0.8V. +30V OVP Anode voltage of D863. +15V OVP Anode voltage of D861. Normal operation is approximately 0V. Shutdown activates at > 2.8V. Section two: The +15V under voltage protect (UVP) and 15V UVP monitor the outputs of the sub-power supply. If the output voltages decrease, shutdown activates. Test Points +15V UVP Anode voltage of D866. -15V UVP Anode voltage of D867. Normal operation is approximately 0V. Shutdown activates at > 2.8V. Section three: The x-ray protect monitors for excess high voltage. The +125V OCP monitors the current flow from the main power supply to the horizontal circuit. The +35V OCP monitors the supply current for the vertical and high voltage regulation circuit. (G line TVs have a +9UVP and +35UVP that monitor the supply voltages for the deflection circuit. The UVP circuits are tied to and trigger the +35V OCP if either the +9V or +35V drop below 5V). The +200V UVP monitors the 200V to the CRT drive boards. Test Points X-ray Voltage at pins 11 and 13 of Z801. Pin 13: Normal operation is 22V. Shutdown activates at > 25V. Pin 11: Normal operation is 25V. Shutdown activates at <22V. +125V OCP Voltage across R470. Normal operation is 0.5V to 1V. Shutdown activates at 1.5V. +35V OCP (9UVP and 35UVP G line) Collector voltage of Q370. Normal operation is 0V. Shutdown activates at > 9V. +200V UVP Collector voltage of Q341. Normal operation is 0V. Shutdown activates at > 3.6V.

Peak-Response Meter. When the shutdown circuit engages, Z801 holds pin 16 low (0 volts), causing the relay drivers to turn OFF and deenergize the relay. This removes all power to the TV, except for the standby power supply. Because Z801 is powered by the standby supply, the television must be unplugged to reset Z801s internal latch. Refer to the figure below. When the relay opens at shutdown, the condition that caused the shutdown disappears. Therefore, a peak-

response (or min-max) meter is required for pinpointing the momentary cause of the shutdown. A peak-response meter measures and stores the highest or lowest voltage that occurs at a test point. No Peak-Response Meter. If a peak-response meter is not available, try using an oscilloscope on the DC setting. The scope reacts quicker than a digital voltmeter, and the change in DC level can be seen on the scope. However, the peak-response meter is the preferred method for measurement.

Shutdown occurs with one of the following: (a)the voltage on Pin 14 rises above 1V. (b)the voltage on pin 13 rises above the reference voltage on pin 11. (c)the voltage drop across R470 rises above 1.5V. 5V from standby power supply R848 D865 R7782 Q768 R7750 Q759 R7765 Q762 R849 D860 Q853 Q854 D867 OVP = Over Voltage Protect OCP = Over Current Protect UVP = Under Voltage Protect D861 D315 D866 + 15V UVP - 15V UVP D370 R370 Q370 + 35V OCP Q340 Q341 + 200V UVP D7701 15 14 13 D471 X-Ray Protect X-RAY REF. 11 R889 25V from main power supply D863 Protect out to relay driver QB30 0V = Shutdown + 5V = Normal 1 16 Z801 2

Troubleshooting Flowchart
Caution: Before removing or adding fuses, remove all power from the television and always use an Isolation transformer when troubleshooting.
Start

Remove fuse F470.

Notes: With F470 open, the power LED blinks whether the television is in shutdown or not. The indication of shutdown is the relay disengaging after closing, and the power must be removed and restored to the TV to re-engage the relay. Key: OVP = Over Voltage Protect OCP = Over Current Protect UVP = Under Voltage Protect

No

Apply power to the TV. Does it still shutdown?

Connect a 100W light bulb between the power supply side of F470 and isolated ground. Check the voltage across it.

Yes Check the +15 OCP -15 OCP, + 30 OCP, + 30V OVP, and +15 OVP. (Section one) Does the voltage regulate at +125V?

Yes Remove the light bulb and put F470 back in circuit. Remove F850 and P712 on the convergence output board

No

Check the Main power supply.

If the television powers up, it will be out of convergence. Do not let the television run for an extended time in this condition. If left in this condition long enough, it can burn the phosphorous in the CRTS. If additional testing is required in this condition, turn the contrast and brightness all the way down to reduce the risk.

No

Apply power to the TV. Does it still shutdown? Yes

Check +15V UVP and -15 UVP (Section two)

Check +125V OCP, X-ray Protect, +200V UVP, and +35V OCP. (Section three)
