Comprehension is critical to successful reading. Occurs during whole class, small group, or independent instruction.

Metacognition helps students influence and make decisions about the reading process. Provides guided practice in authentic text. Reader verbalizes thought process as they become metacognitive. Environment must be safe. High levels of comprehension are not gained from decoding skills alone. Environment matters as much as the strategy. Nature of instruction is a critical feature of context focuses. Strategy was taught but not how to be strategic. Instruction improves reading comprehension. One way is to incorporate strategy instruction into every aspect of the classroom. No wrong answers in a safe learning environment.
