THEN The night was clear and cold, The snow lay thick around, And beings that of old A starry home had found, Sang to us of eternal love In the bright realms of space above . But not in Aphrodite's bowers Amid the purple sky, welt there a !oy more pure than mine "hen one I loved was by. #er eyes to me were brighter orbs Than all the stars of night. And the ripple of her silvery voice $utvied the harp's delight. NOW The dream of bliss is over, And the night is cold % The planet spirits hover As of old% Bright, beautiful, and loving still they shine, And she is with them whom I once thought mine& Through the dark skies, ye gleaming eyes of night, 'inger around her, let her path be bright% Bear her some passing memory of me (rom these lone islands of the southern sea, And let her answer be the )ephyr's care own through the pathways of the frosty air.
