    PREVENTION OF CORROSION BY MATERIAL SELECTION AND DESIGN : Design is the initial stage for protection against corrosion.

    Before a suitable design is made , careful consideration of constructional material ; atmospheric and environmental conditions ; and accessibility for maintenance and repair is required. DESIGN AND MATERIAL SELECTION PRINCIPLES : (a) Avoid L, T and U shaped profiles in constructions as far as possible. This is because , the greater the number of angles , corners , edges and internal surfaces in any design , it becomes more difficult for efficient surface treatment. b! Avoid "alvanic corrosion by follo#ing methods $ i! %ever &oin different metals and alloys , especially if they are far apart in the galvanic series. 'f at all they have to be used together , insulate them #ith efficient moisture resistant electrical insulator . ii! %ever use a design in #hich relative si(es of the cathode and anode are #idely different . iii! )cre#s , bolts , nuts and #elds must be made from a more noble material than the &oined materials . iv! *ontinuous #elds should be preferable . The intermittent #elds are unsuitable both from the mechanical and corrosion point of vie#. The smaller side of #eld should be turned to#ard the corrosive medium . c! Avoid improper insulation other#ise lea+age of current ta+es the place . )uch stray currents cause anodic corrosion , especially in areas #here electricity traction is used . d! Avoid the contact of metallic ob&ect #ith moisture . i! The design of a structure should be such that retention of moisture should be as lo# as possible . ii! Design the storage containers in such a manner that they can be completely

    drained and cleaned . iii! Arrange profiles in such a manner that #ater is completely drained and as far as possible , avoid crevice corrosion . ,or e-ample , Design electrical bo-es e-posed to atmosphere! in such a manner that #ater does not collect at the top or in the crevice .
