The media center meeting discussed goals to increase student use of e-books and classroom visits to the media center in the 2014-2015 school year. They planned to add a computer for student self-checkout, promote drop everything and read initiatives, and teach students how to access e-books. Goals also included encouraging reading across genres for accelerated reader and making it part of classroom rotations. The goals further aimed to increase classroom visits by highlighting classes that visited, emailing teachers reminders, and tracking visits with incentives.

INCREASE STUDENT CIRCULATION AND USE OF E-BOOKS Add a computer next to the catalog computer and teach students how to do self-checkout. They will need to return their books the day before to make sure its checked in if they plan to do self-checkout. DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) initiative Increase use of e-books by incorporating a lesson on accessing e-books in the beginning of the year orientation. Increase use of e-books by sending out the link to the screencast on accessing e-books so new students and students needing a refresher can view it. Allow 3rd and 4th graders to join 5th graders in checking out two books at a time. This will encourage them to check out one book for AR and one free choice book. Focus on reading across genres in AR instead of accumulating the most points. Set goals for individual students and classes. Make AR reading part of classroom literacy rotations with the expectation that all students take regular tests (intervals depending on the length of the books). Encourage students to use the media center while working on projects for their classroom or the whole school. INCREASE CLASSROOM VISITS TO THE MEDIA CENTER Have a Paws Up section of the weekly curriculum update highlighting the classes who came for check out and/or lessons. E-mail teachers the night before or morning of the class visits they signed up for to decrease media center no-shows. Also request that teachers collect library books and send them to the media center prior to check out so that their books can be checked in before the students are ready to check out. Teach the teachers how to use the checkout system to check out books for themselves and their students if nobody is in the media center. Create a calendar in Outlook for teachers to sign up for library times without having to come to the media center to check the sign up book. Also create an Outlook calendar for the adjoining computer lab. Have a monthly chart of class visits in the hallway with quarterly incentives for the classes with the most visits.
