Should the Canadian Government Introduce New Laws to Deal with our Changing Society?
1 Use at least THREE Units from the course and include cases, articles, current events and class discussion from each of those three units to answer the following: Law mirrors the society it serves and adapts with the changes in society. What changes to the law are necessary and should be introduced into our society? Or Canadian Laws represent the struggle to determine the appropriate relationship between law and morality? What issue in law is currently caught in a struggle between moral and legal applications? Or Our legal system is now characterized by judicial, not parliamentary supremacy. What areas of law have been changed due to court challenges, and should the powers of Judges be strengthened or limited. Or Imagine that it is decided that Canadian society would be better off if everyone had less individual freedoms. The government has decided to implement a constitutional change to the Charter. What areas of the Charter have been expanded or abused by the legal system and need to be changed or limited. Task: 1. Students will determine a position for the above topic. You must choose to a law or set of laws that should be changed (legalize, decriminalize or strengthen). 2. Students will write a properly prepared essay using research found on the topic (this also includes any information discussed in class). Use a minimum of six sources (primary sources, books, periodicals,
documents, published papers, reputable internet sites, encyclopedias, Criminal Code). A proper bibliography of your sources. Research information on your 6 key sources organized and recorded in your own words.

3. The paper must be typed 4 8 pages (1000-2000 words), and must include: a. Your paper must have a decisive thesis. b. Your paper must have 6 paragraphs (see attached template to be handed in) c. Your second paragraph must provide information on the alternative views to your position you will try to prove. d. Your paper must have a bibliography listing the research provided to you in alphabetical order in proper style- see example on website. Your bibliographical sourcing will be assessed for marks. e. Each body paragraph must have a minimum of 3 supporting facts, quotes, or information from your research.
