Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact Rationale/Reflection NAEYC Standard:

STANDARD 3. Observing, documenting, and assessing to support young children and families Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs understand that child observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals. They know about and understand the goals, benefits, and uses of assessment. They know about and use systematic observations, documentation, and other effective assessment strategies in a responsive way, in partnership with families and other professionals, to positively influence the development of every child. (NAEYC, 2011)

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the summer semester of 2013, in my ECED practicum, I put together a child case study. This case study consisted of materials, observations, and assessments of one specific child throughout the course of the semester. I gathered information about the chil ds home life, interests, and information from his family and background, along with activities and lessons I put together specifically for this child. From observation and record keeping, I was able to come up with activities that met this childs needs and wants for development, along with meeting his interests. This activity helped me learn just how important it is to focus on each child and learn about each child as an individual, so we can meet their individual needs.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Through completion of this case study, I was able to use assessment, observation, and documentation, as well as gather information about the childs home life and background in order to understand this child and where he is at developmentally. I was able to determine what types of activities triggered his interests and allowed him to thrive, as well as learn what was too difficult for him. I gained knowledge of the use for assessment, observation, and documentation and was able to use it first hand to develop lessons and activities that were individualized for this child.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the NAEYC Standard:

This project was one of my many projects that I used tools such as observation and assessment in order to reach a final goal. I was able to use knowledge that I gained to put together materials and activities that were developmentally appropriate for a specific child and was then able to share this information with his family to help further his development. Through my research, I have gained knowledge about how important assessment and observation are when working with children, and I was also able to learn more about the child by having a good communicating relationship with this childs parents.
