The bar chart compares the proportions of male and female who cannot read and write in six

areas in the world. In general, female illiteracy is much higher than that of the male , and they are the highest among people from South Asia.

It can be seen from the graph that in developed countries the numbers of either men or women can read and write are approximately equal to 99%. Moreover, there are 10% of men who are lack of literacy skills, and this number is a little higher for women in Latin America/Caribbean. While East Asia/Oceania has the approximation of the illiteracy rate for male with America/Caribbean, its rates for female are almost double, at 20%

The rates for the next three areas were much higher and quite similar to each other. Sub-Saharan Africa, the Arab States and South Asia had rates of approximately 31%, 29% and 34% of male illiteracy and 48%, 52% and 56% for women illiteracy respectively.
