Did You Know

By Briana G.
There are 34 million U.S. citizens who claim Irish ancestry? While its customary to wear green on St. Patricks Day in the U.S., the color green is actually considered unlucky in Ireland? The first St. Patricks Day Parade was held in Boston, Massachusetts? The Shamrock was considered the official plant of Ireland?

How Much Sleep Do You Get A Night?

Have you ever wondered why some kids come to school tired and walk around like zombies? Most likely, its because they are sleepy. They don't get the amount of sleep growing teenagers need. Kids in middle school need about 9 to 10 hours of sleep a night. Some kids sleep the hours needed, but are still tired. This is because they are not in a deep sleep. They wake up a lot of times during the night, which could be a cause of being sleepy during the day. Kids sometimes are just down right tired. My advice is to go to sleep at the right time and dont play Black Ops 2 all night. Kids also are known to check social media sights before bed, like looking at Facebook posts, which causes their brains to stay active, not get into sleep mode. Again, its best to shut everything (TV, cell phones, etc.) off a few hours before bed, so you will be well rested and ready to learn at school.

8th grader, Jorge Martinez is a good example of why you should get enough sleep. He says, I get about five hours of sleep a night. My lack of sleep does affect me in some classes. I tend to fall asleep in class, and even woke up with my face in my food at lunchtime!

The Scholastic Book Fair: A Huge Success! By Orlando M.

This year Kings Canyon Middle School had a book fair. The book fair took place in the library. The libarian, Mrs. McGarvin hosted the book fair. The book fair made more than $700! When I asked Mrs. McGarvin if anyone stole anything, she said that she would find out during inventory. Unfortunately, she has to pay for the loss if there is one. Overall, the book fair was a great success. Several students and teachers were walking away with books, posters, school supplies, and other fun things. We all hope to continue the fair next year and appreciate all of the hard work from Mrs. McGarvin!

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

The Battle of the Books club met every Wednesday to talk about the books they were reading. They had great leaders, Mrs. McGarvin and Mrs. Kruse. I thought about quitting due to other pressures, but Im glad I didnt. The way books transport you is enchanting! said Teela Hamilton, 7th grader. She liked the club because she

enjoys the stories. The club read The Good Dog, Firegirl and other good books. The battle of the books club tried their best to get in the tournament. The tournament was at Fresno Pacific University. They tried their best at the tournament but they, unfortunately didnt place. They had a great time though and are excited for next years competition.

A TEACHER or AN ACTRESS ?
Ever since the age of 11, Mrs. Jenkins knew she wanted to be a teacher. Both of her grandmothers were teachers and her mother always taught her that education was important. While playing school with her younger siblings, she would play the role of a teacher. Acting also interested her, which is why she took an acting class in high school. She even fantasized about making it to Broadway. Shes also been told she wouldve been a good party planner or a wedding planner. By: Elisa R. Ramos

Interview with Mrs. Blanks

Mrs. Blanks is a seventh grade teacher at Kings Canyon. She teaches ELA and LINC. When I asked her what she thinks about her job, she said, I love my job, because I love interacting with students. Mrs. Blanks was inspired to be a teacher by her sixth grade teacher. The family atmosphere, great staff, and the students are very cool, is what she said when I asked her what she likes about Kings Canyon. I asked her what the craziest thing she has seen at KCMS was and she said It was when I was at a KC football game and the mascot was dancing without the head because someone dropped it out of their car on their way to the game. I asked her if there are days where she is stressed out and she said There are certain days when I do get stressed out, but then I think of how what I do can change someones life at school and it calms me down.

We know Mrs. Jenkins as a teacher and staff member, but what about her free time? Shes the oldest girl out of 5. She has been married 34 years and has 2 kids, a boy and girl. She likes to play with her dogs, Max and Sadie, and she likes gardening. Remember how I said shes been told she plans good parties? Well she likes doing that too and who doesn't like cooking and shopping? She sure does! Mrs. Jenkins words of encouragement would be Work hard, its worth it. She also says I enjoy my interviewer, who I had last year for ELA and I work with this year in LINC. Now that you know about Mrs. Jenkins, go next door to learn about Mrs. Blanks!

I asked her what she thinks about the dress code and she said, It would be nice to wear some of my red clothes. And when I asked her what her most embarrassing moment was, she stated One day I came to school and my pants were too big and I tripped over them in front of the whole class! That was my interview with Mrs. Blanks and she is very cool and nice, so if you have her as your teacher, you are very lucky!

Si Se Puede!!!
On February 5, Mr. Aguirre, Mr. Green, and 13 male Latino students from KCMS attended the Si Se Puede Conference at Fresno State. The conference is strictly intended for male Latino students and challenges, motivates, and inspires them to make the right choices in life to have a bright future. Each student went to two workshops to learn skills like engineering, graphics, media, law enforcement, government service, and medicine. Efrain Gonzalez said, It was a great experience. The male Latino speakers at the conference talked about their careers and their own personal struggles. Several of the students had amazing things to say about their trip. Jose Rangel said, When I went to Fresno State, I was encouraged by a teacher who told us the story of his tough childhood. His stepfather always drank and abused his mom. His stepbrothers were in gangs and fought all the time. He overcame all of these obstacles and now makes a lot of money as a counselor and uses his experiences to help others.

COLLEGE MAKING IT HAPPEN

KC parents and students came to learn about college at College Making it Happen last month. It is a program for California Middle School families and educators. They learn about grants, scholarships, work study, and loans. It explains the A-G requirements, which are the classes that are required to be able to apply to a 4-year University. I highly encourage students to attend College Making It Happen, field trips to Universities, and participate in any other activities where they have the opportunity to learn

about college. The more activities a student participates in, the better prepared he or she is for their future. Also, don't forget to get your parents involved. When your parents are familiar with the process, it makes it easier for everyone, said Mr. Aguirre. Most students don't go to college because they think they cant afford it. College is expensive, but there is a lot of money out there that may cover all of your expenses. So, take Mr. Aguirres advice and Dont WAIT! Start planning for your bright future today!

Lady Grizzlies Varsity: Basketball Isn't Just a Sport for Them

By Ruby M.
This years lady Grizzlies Varsity basketball team lead by Coach Esajian started the season off with a win for their first league game! They didnt care if the other girls were bigger, taller or faster. These girls are here to play a basketball game, not to measure the other team, nor to carry them. Its basketball, and the Grizzlies mean business. With courage and amazing teamwork, thats enough for them to keep themselves going. Last years Junior Varsity team came back as a strong Varsity team . Lets make sure we encourage them, because its very exciting when they hear cheers from the crowd out there for support. All the YEAHs, clapping and stomping keep them going.

Thank you for filling the bleachers up with your bottoms and cheers. It was a tough season over all, but they still stuck together. With recent wins over Bullard Talent (38-16), Lawless (22-5), and Wawona (29-22) their current record is 4-5. Give it up for the Lady Grizzlies!

Varsity Baseball By: Sayla T.

Playing baseball is so much fun, especially when you are on the team. Sometimes you meet a new person who ends up being your friend for the rest of the year. It is true that you learn good sportsmanship and how to work as a team. These guys also need to maintain good grades, so they are extremely dedicated boys. The 2014 KC baseball team is doing so well this year. They are very talented and we cant what to see how they finish off the season!.
