Did you know that rap is a form of poetry? The Haiku is one of the most popular short poem styles.

Beautifully Broken Her pigtails swayed in the breeze. Her eyes blue as crystal Laughing with ease. She grasped his hand tightly As they climbed the tall ladder. What they said or did Truly didnt matter. They would sit in the tree house For hours on end, Giggling and smiling And playing pretend. Not a care in this world, Not a whisper or remorse. They could be heard through the trees Of the thick hazy forest. Its been five years Since I saw her last. I remember her smile Now a thing of the past. Her eyes dull as a shadow, Her wrists scarred with masks. Its like someone picked her up And broke her apart. I wish she could see The beauty inside. I could fix her and mend her heart, Build a world thats not falling apart. C. Shephard

Victims Regeneration I see the veil Cross my eyes. A thousand years, A million lies. I pale as I gasp My final breath, And review my life As I face my death. The road is long that I have traveled, The lightnings flashed Before my eyes. I wave to those That I leave behind. Im not ashamed to die, As a phoenix I rise, From the ashes of red, And you still dwell A thought in my head. As a rose I wither Away in the storm That is the world. But of course, Every rose has its thorn. T. Hamilton

I was there. I was there with the laughter that got louder. I was there surrounded with hatred growing stronger and stronger, as the light within everyone faded away in the darkness. Suddenly, a spark grew from the darkness and got bigger and brighter. Thats when the little light grew and guided the bird out of the cage. T. Yang

KCMS Hosts Preview Day 2014!

LILY - Preview Day

By Lily Y.

On March 29th, 2014 Kings Canyon held an event for 6th graders to come and explore Kings Canyon Middle School and to see how both 7th and 8th grade will be. Students and parents from different Fresno Unified elementary schools came and, of course, had a ton of fun. KCMS teachers showed 6th graders the different

core classes. Electives, and other great programs we have at KCMS. A few that were visited were Robotics, AVID, Spanish, Journalism, PE, and a long list of others. There were even performers in the cafeteria and lunch was provided to all! Thanks to all of the wonderful teachers and administrators at KC. The 6th graders will surely be prepared for next year!

Gone
But if all they did is kill time, time would end up killing them (Grant, 102).

By Karen M.
15, youre gone too. For the younger kids, this isn't a big worry, but for 14year-old Sam Temple, thats whats keeping him awake at night. People start taking sides, bullies rule, and death pretty much becomes their new best friend. To make matters worse, some kids start developing supernatural powers that get stronger every day. Check out Gone, by Michael Grant, and the rest of the series Hunger, Lies, Plague, Fear, and last but not least, Light.

In the blink of an eye, everyone over the age of 15 is gone. No parents, no teachers, and no older brothers or sisters are around to tell you what to do. This sounds awesome right? Well, thats what the kids of Perdido Beach, California first thought, too, but they soon realized that they were trapped with no internet or any other way to communicate with the outside world, if there even still was one. The town quickly became a prison to these survivors. Also, the day you turn

AVID Visits UC Merced! By Victoria J.

The 8th grade Kings Canyon AVID students that maintained a high GPA all year got to go on the field trip to UC Merced on March 12th. They went to the college for exposure to the latest UC, right here in the valley. They got to go on a tour of the college and were able to see dorms, and learn about advances in agricultural science. The AVID students sat in a college classroom for a question and answer session. For lunch, the 8th graders ate the awesome college food. They got to learn about the variety of fun programs available to UC Merced students when they are

not studying. I asked some of the students that went and they said that they had a great time on the trip and they wish to remind next years students to keep their grades up, so they can have the great opportunity as well!

AVID 7th Graders Visit Fresno State by Briana G.

On March 12th, the 7th grade AVID students went to Fresno State. They visited the art library and learned about how each building is nanmed for a specific career, such as School of Education, Sociology, Engineering, Business, etc. There are also many clubs to join and an amazing food court. The purpose of the trip was to explore the college and campus that is right here in our own backyard! Mrs. Hickey wanted to give the kids meaningful exposure that really makes the college experience come alive to the students. Kids also enjoyed visiting the planetarium, which works with NASA to create awesome learning videos. They shared one of their videos with the class! Students had a taste of what college was like as they walked to and from class, sat at tables together studying and eating, and were perceived as college students by the students who attended CSUF. One of the students even said, I didnt think I wanted to come to Fresno State, until now, but Im totally coming here. I really like it!

Monterey Field Trip

This year, students were selected by our PLUS teachers to spend the day at Monterey Bay. The kids went to museums, an aquarium, and the beach. Their first stop was Casa de Fruta, where they enjoyed their breakfast, then came the aquarium. The kids got to see the fish get fed and all of the other interesting sea creatures.

by Elisa R.

After the trip to the aquarium, they got to eat lunch on the beach. Some kids even went into the water. They also got dinner, choosing between three selections. Overall, it was a fun experience for the kids. If youre in seventh grade, this could be you next year. Just remember to try your best and you may just qualify!

Graphic Art as a Form of Self-Expression, Not Vandalism

Erik Gonzalez is a spray can artist who has had many opportunities to work with big adverting companies who wish to catch the eyes of the community's youth. His artwork is so good that hes received calls from Disney, which we all know is big, especially with the youngsters. Not only is he a graffiti artist, but hes also a creative outreach consultant for teens like us. Hes been working with a community organization for four years. He creates this very powerful artwork that speaks to teens and attracts them. Gonzalez says that he has always wanted to share the love and create opportunities. He says theres a respect in freedom and peace. This guy doesn't just use normal spray paint. The paint used by an artist like him is very rare in the U.S. He uses brands from all over the world, signature cans that go up to about $50 and company brands. He said Things have really changed. By that, he means graffiti is no longer only seen as vandalism, its also considered to be artwork. He explained that kids shouldnt waste their time trying to be the best by doing bad things, instead they should try and be the best by using their talents for positive things. Graffiti is actually accepted in other parts of the world, but not as much here in the U.S., because so many people do it to destroy public property. If you get busted at a young age destroying property, the chances of being able to get your drivers license at eighteen are very low, Gonzalez explained.

By Ruby M .

I wasted a lot of years and it negatively affected me, shares Gonzalezs friend. Make the right decisions and pursue a good art school, if youre into art. Erik Gonzalez ended his presentation by saying, Practice respect, be kind to yourself and others. Enjoy art. His fellow artist added, Wage beauty, create love with art. Students of KCMS, remember to make the right choices. Youre young. Its never too early to plan your future and the paths you want to take in life. Thank you, Mrs. Wothe, for letting me share such an enlightening experience with your class.

From Cowboy to Senator: Andy Vidak Visits KCMS!

by Arvill B.
Andy Vidak came to KCMS to talk with our Journalism, Womens Alliance, and Social Justice classes. He shared his experiences growing up in the valley and the road that he took to become a state senator. He a was born in Visalia and was the oldest of five siblings. He graduated from Redwood High School and attended Visalias College of the Sequoias. He had many jobs, some of those being an Easter Bunny at the mall and a cowboy! He realized he wanted to become a senator after learning about issues we face in the valley, like the water crisis. The students had amazing questions to ask Mr. Vidak, ranging from minimum wage, the high-speed rail, and how to break the cycle of poverty. Mr. Vidak gave great advice to students, explaining that students should always ask questions, stay positive, and become interested in something that could help society.

The KCMS Band Takes Their Talent To Sunnyside High

By Briana G. and Orlando M.
On March 27th, Mr. Salehis beginning band went to Sunnyside High School to perform amongst other schools. KCMS was the only school that brought their beginning class. We competed against other middle schools, some of those being Computech, Baird, Tioga, and Sequoia. When Kings Canyon arrived at SHS, they headed to the library to practice. There were some high school students who came to watch. The students seemed shocked at all of the amazing young talent in the room.

When KC was done practicing, they headed off to SHSs beautiful theater. KC was the first school to perform! Their choreography was amazing and they did an outstanding job, especially as beginners! They performed two songs: Anasazi and Montego Bay. KC won a plaque which rated them as Excellent! Practice doesnt make you perfect, you make perfect said student Victor Villa after the performance. Never give up on anything, said Delray Coleman, commenting on KCs excellent performance.

Fun with Folklorico & Middle School Show Off

KCMS had its first Club Day in March. One of the main attractions was the Folklorico dancers. They have been practicing almost everyday. That is how hard they worked, and it definitely paid off. Almost everyone was gathered around to see them at lunchtime. They did an amazing job dancing and everyone was entertained. Their teacher, Mrs. Gonzalez, worked hard to teach them the history of the traditional dances and educating them about the proper attire as well. A few parents and other helpers came to help the students with their formal wear and makeup.

by Sophia M. and Rhiana R.

At the Middle School Show Offs Kings Canyon competed at Terronez Middle School. The other schools which competed Abraham Lincoln Middle School, Kastner Intermediate School Terronez, and Sequoia. The Folklorico team did their best to represent our school. They did a tremendous job dancing. Everyone was clapping and was very excited to see them perform. We are proud to have had such amazing students take part in this event.
