Annotated Lesson Plan:

Unit 2, Day 2

Karen Guarino Geometry 9-11 Congruence, Angle Bisector, and Midpoint

OVERVIEW/ RATIONALE

65 Minutes

This lesson, second in the unit on geometric terms and their use in explaining the relationships of shapes, is meant to introduce the ideas of congruence, midpoint, and angle bisectors. Students will practice identifying congruent segments and their values and naming different lines, segments, and angles. Students will then become more familiar with these terms through patty paper investigation and the constructions of congruent angles and segments. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS Geometry provides the language and concepts to describe and understand the shapes, sizes, patterns, and relationships of objects in the real world. Measurements of length can be estimated. What are some of the key elements and tools of geometry? How reliable are our measurements and observations?
GOALS/OBJECTIVES Students will be able to understand the meaning of the terms congruence, midpoint, and angle bisector. They will be able to properly name angles, segments, and lines. STANDARDS Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Attend to precision. Prove theorems about lines and line segments. Make formal geometric constructions. MATERIALS 6 pieces of patty paper per student, notes sheet, patty paper investigation sheet

PROCEDURES OPENER Warm-up: 10 minutes Review Homework: 15 minutes Notes on congruence, midpoint, and angle bisector: 10 minutes Practice problems: 10 minutes

BODY OF THE LESSON Patty Paper investigation: 5 minutes will be spent doing Part A together. Students will then spend the remaining time in class (roughly 10-13 minutes) doing the investigation. Last 2 minutes will be spent discussing homework for the following day. CLOSURE

Students will complete the rest of the investigation for homework: Closing comments: how are we all doing? What are some obstacles we make encounter at home? What do we do if we get stuck at home? How can we still show that we are putting effort in?

ACCOMODATIONS Will be provided as needed

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION (MAY HAPPEN IN BODY/ PROCEDURES)

Students will be assessed on their ability to complete the investigation worksheet. Students will be accessed informally as a class through various check-ins throughout the lesson. 10 minutes in, students will be asked to come back together and explain where they are so far. While they are working, teacher will walk around and survey how the students are doing. Through conversations, questioning the teacher will also informally assess the students understanding of the concept.
