Lesson Plan: Totalitarianism, Nationalism and Genocide

Mr. Shane Underwood: Subject: Grade Level: Time duration: World History II 10th 30min for finding media 2min per presentation Materials needed: -Computer -internet -Prezi Lesson Objective: Purpose of the Lesson: WHII.12 SOL. Examine the Holocaust and other examples of genocide in the twentieth century. -To understand how nationalism and totalitarianism led to various genocides; - To understand the definition of genocide as the systematic and purposeful destruction of a racial, political, religious or cultural group. Activity: The students will break into groups of three and use various academic and peer reviewed websites to find propaganda in the form of movie clips, posters, speeches and other forms of media which demonstrate the degradation of a particular racial, religious or cultural group under a totalitarian regime throughout history. The students will select three different examples and use them to explain how they reflect ideas of nationalism and helped lead to genocide in a short group presentation to the class while showing media. Teacher will listen and take notes on each students short explanation of their media in order to assess if each student is able to explain and thus understand how systems of nationalism led to racial, political and cultural propaganda which helped lead into genocide. Students who are not able to make this connection

Assessment:

will be evident by their explanation and will be able to be have one on one time with the teacher for further explain.
