Success with sport education at a secondary level: implementation and examples from a basketball season [Electronic version]. Strategies: A Journal for Physical and Sport Educators, 23(3), 12-16. In this article, Kevin Mercier describes a model for physical educators to use when creating a traditional sport unit. The article begins by briefly describing the Sport Education Model. This is a model for teaching a sport unit in which the student receives an authentic sport experience (p. 12). The students are divided into teams, which they will stay in for the entire unit, to which the teacher may change to ensure fair squads. Team members are then assigned roles such as coach, assistant coach, trainer, scorer, equipment manager, attendance coordinator, and referee. These roles help give the students a sense of responsibility and importance on the team. Teams have practice days in which the teacher may lead drills or teach students zone defense, but students practice these in their teams. The authors purpose of the article is to give an example of the Sport Education Model and how it can be successfully implemented. They accomplish this by describing the unit in a high school setting. I believe this can be altered easily in order to fit the 7th and 8th grade level that I am instructing. Mercier says that most units, called seasons in sport education, last about 20 class periods. Though I will not be able to implement a full 4-week unit of basketball, many components of the sport education model can be used in my unit. For example, I can take the draft idea of making teams and adapt it. Instead of having two captains pick the teams, I can pick two boys and two girls for each team and have them decide which of the remaining students they want on their team. This way, both the students and myself can influence what the teams are. The idea of roles can also be altered so that the roles rotate each day. I can use this article as a way to take bits and pieces of the Sport Education Model when creating the daily lessons for my unit. Using this as a basis for content will give the each student a more authentic feel of a basketball season. This way students that may not be skilled enough, do not have enough time, or for whatever other reason are not able to be on the school basketball team, can all have somewhat of an experience being on a team.

Zourbanos, N. (2013, October). The use of instructional and motivational self-talk in setting up a physical education lesson [Electronic version]. Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance, 84(8), 54-58. This article is meant to help physical education instructors use the idea of positive self-talk with their students in the classroom. Zourbanos describes self-talk as what athletes say to themselves silently or out loud (p. 54). Any time you think or talk to yourself, it is considered self-talk. Zourbanos references research on selftalk done by Anderson, Vogel, and Albrecht (1999) in which self-talk improved overhand throw performance in 3rd grade PE students. The uses of self-talk will hopefully not only improve student performance, but also increase their desire to participate in PE class, their appreciation for physical activity, and improve selfesteem and give them more self-confidence (p. 56). Zourbanos describes two types of self-talk; instructional and motivational. Instructional self-talk is used to help improve skills, while motivational self-talk can be used to develop confidence and self-esteem. Using instructional and motivational self-talk in my unit will help develop the strategies used in my teaching. I wish to have a positive atmosphere each day in my class. If there is a student that is down on themselves because they feel they are not very good at a particular skill, using motivational self-talk cues like, I can do it and lets go can help create this positive atmosphere. It is also important to have constant encouragement from themselves, their peers, and myself to keep everyones spirits high, regardless of skill level.
