ON SOLVING HOMOGENE SYSTEMS

Florentin Smarandache, Ph D Associate Professor Chair of Department of Math & Sciences University of New Mexico 200 College Road Gallup, NM 87301, USA E-mail:smarand@unm.edu In the High School Algebra manual for grade IX (1981), pp. 103-104, is presented a method for solving systems of two homogenous equations of second degree, with two unknowns. In this article well present another method of solving them. Lets have the homogenous system a1 x 2 b1 xy c1 y 2 d1
a2 x 2 b2 xy c2 y 2 d2 with real coefficients. We will note x ty , (or y tx ), and by substitution, the system becomes: y 2 (a1t 2 b1t c1 ) d1 (1) y 2 (a2t 2 b2t c2 ) d 2 (2) Dividing (1) by (2) and grouping the terms, it results an equation of second degree of variable t : a1d2 a2 d1 t 2 b1d2 b2 d1 t c1d2 c2 d1 0 If t 0 , the system doesnt have solutions. If t 0 , the initial system becomes equivalent with the following systems:

(S1 )
and

t1 y b1 xy c1 y2 t2 y d1

a1 x 2 x

a1 x 2 b1 xy c1 y2 d1 which can simply be resolved by substituting the value of x from the first equation into the second. Further we will provide an extension of this method. Let have the homogeneous system:
n

(S2 )

ai , j x n i y i ,
i 0
n i 0

j 1, m

To resolve this, we note x

yn ai , j t n
i

ty , it results:
j 1, m

bj ,

By dividing in order the first equation to the rest of them, we obtain:

n n

ai ,1t n
i 0

i i 0

ai , j t n

b1 / b j , j

2, m

or:
n

ai ,1b j
i 0

ai , j b1 t n i , j

2, m

We will find the real values t1 ,..., t p from this system. The initial system is equivalent with the following systems x th y n ( Sh ) where h 1, p . ai ,1 x n 1 y i b1
i 0
