PATIENTS
The purpose of this research was to study the effectiveness of individual counseling
on medical compliance. This study was performed among diabetic outpatients at diabetic clinic
of Kaeng Khoi hospital between March and October 2001. The sample consisted of 30 diabetic
patients in control group and 27 diabetic patients in intervention group. Medical compliance was
assessed using interview method for 3 times when the patients were followed-up at
4-week interval. Individual counseling about medication taking, disease and lifestyle change was
performed on patients in intervention group to resolve noncompliance whereas patients in control
group received a usual pharmacy instructions on medication use.
The demographic characteristics of patients in both groups were not significantly different.
A baseline, the compliance of control group and intervention group were 33.3% and 37.0%
respectively. Noncompliance problems mostly found in both group were taking medicine at
wrong time and forgetting to take medicine. The causes of problems mostly observed were
dont read the label before taking medicine and lack of knowledge about disease and/or
drug. At the end of the study, it was found that compliance of patients in intervention group
was significantly higher than control group (p = 0.007). In comparison between pre- and post
counseling (p = 0.002) but the result was shown no significant difference in control group.
However, 18.5% of patients in intervention group also had noncompliance problems. .
