Mini LP- Vocabulary for To Kill a Mockingbird

Vocabulary words: Assuage, apothecary, predilection, malevolent, quaint, revelation, persecute, tyrannical, indigenous, peculiarity Monday List out words. Discuss students previous knowledge of words and define in their own words what they think the words mean. 15-20 min Tuesday PowerPoint presentation of words. Each word: definition, part of speech, synonym, antonym, examples. Students fill out vocab chart. 5 words first day. 20-25 min. Wednesday PowerPoint presentation of words. Each word: definition, part of speech, synonym, antonym, examples. Students fill out vocab chart. Last 5 words. 20-25 min. Thursday Bell ringer: crossword puzzle Activity: as a class, revisit the definitions. Discuss the words, definitions and examples. Determine as a class if we want to use the dictionarys definition or create our own. 5 min per word. Around the World Part 2: spelling Students play the same way except that the side of the card that the students see is blank. The teacher reads off the word and the student who spells correctly first moves on. *Alternative to this assignment: spelling bee 25 min Friday Activity: Students work in groups of two. One word per group. Using construction paper and markers/crayons, students draw an example depicting their word. 10-15 min

Gallery WalkStudents depictions of the words from the previous week are hung up around the room. Students walk around the room silently and determine which word the picture represents. 15-20 min

Activity: Create a Story Students write a paragraph or create a short story of their choosing. Must include each vocab word spelled and used correctly. 20-25 min

Around the World Part 1: definitions Teacher makes flashcards which have the vocab word on one side and the definition on the other. The students stay in their seats. The first two students stand up. They are shown the definition of the word. The first student to correctly identify the vocab term moves on. They then go against the next student for the next turn. *To take it to the next level, the students can be shown the side with the term and asked to produce the definition. 25 min

Vocab quiz: includes matching the word to the definition and sentences of examples that the student has to correctly identify the right word. 15-20 min
