EGME 476B Energy and Power Laboratory LAB #5B: Diesel Engine Engine Performance

I. Introduction The objective of this lab is to evaluate the performance of a diesel engine. II. Equipment Yanmar Diesel Engine L40 AE-DE DY-7D dynamometer Water Supply Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel in a Fuel Can Flexible Fuel-Delivery Tube Rotameter Air Flow Nozzle (0.75 in. Diameter) Pulse Damping Drum with Manometer Barometer Taylor Sling Psychrometer Reusable Ear Muffs/Disposable Ear Plugs Neoprene Gloves/ANSELL Disposable Gloves III. General Experimental Procedures 1. Read the Procedure for Using Yanmar Diesel Engine handout. 2. Level and zero the manometer on damping drum for air flow rate measurements. 3. Level the rotameter for fuel flow rate measurements. 4. The engine test will be repeated for three throttle settings. For a fixed throttle setting, change the dynamometer load such that the engine is running at five different engine speeds ranging from approximately 2000 rpm to 3750 rpm. For each engine speed setting, record the dynamometer load in pounds, the manometer reading, the rotameter reading and the rpm. 5. Record the atmospheric pressure, temperature and humidity to find the correction factors for air flow rate and horsepower.

You need to answer the following questions in the memo report and show any sample calculations in the attachments. 1. For each rpm, determine (a) air-fuel ratio, (b) horsepower, (c) torque, and (d) specific fuel consumption. 2. Plot the horsepower and torque as a function of rpm. 3. Compare your results with typical test curves for internal combustion engine. V. Memo Report Each student needs to submit a memo report by combining Lab #5A and #5B. The memo report is due by 6 PM on April 23rd, 2013 (Wednesday). You should show the sample calculations in the attachments.
