MINI LESSON PLAN MODULE 12

Teachers Name Subject Grade Level Time Duration Materials Needed Zoe Sanborn Algebra 1 Grade 8 60 minutes Teachers Exampler: http://app.emaze.com/312491/wordproblems#slidenum=1

Computers or mobile devices Lesson Objective SOL A.1 : The student will represent verbal quantitative situations algebraically and evaluate these expressions for given replacement values of the variables.

Purpose of the Lesson

The students will be able to create a presentation similar to the example by the teacher. By creating word problems they will be able to see how one variable is dependent upon another variable. While

watching their classmates present they will see other ways to dissect word problems and how to set up algebraic equations to solve them. Activity The students will watch the short presentation that the teacher created then they will use their computers to create a presentation on emaze.com showing how to solve word problems. Students often have a lot of trouble breaking down word problems and the assignment is for them to show how they personally organize the information and create equations to solve them. They do not have to use the steps given by the teacher or in the book as long as their method works. The students must create all of their own word problems, both their example ones and the two at the end for the class to try. They must show the teacher that they have the answers for all of the problems and that they all work before they turn in their emaze.

MINI LESSON PLAN MODULE 12

Assessment Students present their emaze presentation at the end of class. All students must complete and turn in their solutions to the two word problems at the end of the students presentations. They also must attach a link to their presentation on the discussion board on the class website.

The lesson plan above is inline with the NETS standards. By encouraging the students to create a presentation that illustrates their own method of solving word problems the lesson plan supports the NETS standard 1.a (ISTE standards, 2008). By making the presentation using a digital tool and posting it to the class page the lesson plan covers the NETS standard 2.a (ISTE standards, 2008). It is a digital age learning experience because they are using technology to share with the class their solving system. It enhances their learning because they must create their own problems and therefore must fully understand word problems and how they are constructed. The teacher will also promote digital citizenship and NETS standard 4.a (ISTE standards, 2008) by making sure the students cite any photos they use before they post their presentations on the class web page. The lesson plan above is also inline with the TSIP standards. By allowing students to access each others presentations and having them complete each others practice problems it is inline with TSIP D ("8vac20-25-30. technology standards.," 1998), because

they are accessing and exchanging information. The lesson plan uses technology to teach a Virginia SOL so it meets TSIP E ("8vac20-25-30. technology standards.," 1998).
