Time: 90 minutes

3rd February 2014

! ! !

Topics Covered: Circle, Ellipse, Parabola, Hyperbola (partly)!

Instructions: 1. Read all the questions carefully.! ! 2. Be condent. Be very condent. ! ! 3. Marks* for question i, M(i)= 4 - i (mod 2) + 4[i/9]! Q 1.) Find the equation of the circle which has a diameter of 8cm, touches the lines x=3 & y=1 and lies entirely in the rst quadrant.! Q 2.) Find the equation of the circle which is concentric with the circle and whose area is numerically equal to its own perimeter.!

! Q 3.) Find the foci, directrices, length of latus rectum and eccentricity of the ellipse ! ! ! ! ! Q 5.) Consider the parabola ! ! ! ! !

Q 4.) One of the directrices of an ellipse is x=1 and the corresponding focus is at (4,0). The vertex divides the line joining the focus and the directrix in the ratio 2:1. Find the equation of the ellipse.!

The lines y=x and y=-x are drawn and cut the parabola !

at 2 points (apart from the origin). These three points form a triangle whose area is numerically equal to the length of latus rectum of the parabola. Find the value of a.! Q 6.) Find the equation of the parabola whose directrix is the line y=1 and whose focus lies on the y axis at a distance of 4 units from the directrix.! Q 7.) Find the equation of a hyperbola which has the same given properties as the ellipse in question 4! Q 8.) Find the foci, directrices, vertices, length of latus rectum and eccentricity of the hyperbola!

Q 9.) Consider the set of circles

giving you this in such a nice form). As " varies from 0 to 2*pi, the circle changes and we obtain the complete set of all possible circles. Find the equation of the locus (trajectory) of the centers of these circles. What would be the eccentricity of that gure? (If needed, note that the eccentricity of a circle is zero)!

* a (mod b) = remainder of the division a/b, [.] represents the greatest integer function!

Give up, once for all, this nibbling at things. Take up one idea, Make that one idea your whole lifethink of it, dream of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body be full of that idea and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success. This is the way great giants are produced.
