converted into a non-forest use.

Examples of deforestation include conversion of forestland to farms, ranches, or urban use.

 Over 1 billion people worldwide lack access to safe drinking water. 5,000 people die each day due to dirty drinking water.

 14 billion pounds of garbage are dumped into the ocean every year. Most of it is plastic.

In Defense of Clear Water

Human beings have a primal and indispensable need for a simple substance called water. Holding this truth to be evident, a panel of environment experts, has set out publicly condemn who commit crimes against the requisite liquid. The Central American Water Tribunal denounced several cases in Nicaragua, petroleum exploitation in Guatemala, community drinking water polluted with agricultural chemicals in Costa Rica and the contamination of La Orejona stream with industrial waste, which harms residents, plants and animals in Honduras.

Trade and the Environment

The World Trade Organization (WTO) started to listen to environmentalists who accused it of destroying the environment. For the first time the WTO admits that international trade can harm the environment. Green Groups and voter have only recently mobilized against international trade. Green Groups want countries to evaluate the environment impact of the World Trading System, and also want the WTO to be more transparent, accountable and accessible to the environment groups.

Earth Day Festival

The town of Puerto Jimnez on the Osa Pennsula is hosting its third annual Festival, Da de la Tierra 98. This years festival includes cultural, ecological and athletic events and activities. On Saturday, April 18th, the festival begins with a 9km road race. Beach activities include a volleyball tournament, kayak races, a sand-castle contest, beach soccer and beach olympics. Saturday night is for traditional music and dancing on the beach in the early evening and then a discomovil dance into the early hours of the morning. All are invited to attend this years Earth Day Festival.

Pollution
The only way to protect the rivers and oceans in Costa Rica is to have impact studies involving local community and scientific assessment; this is in order to give diagnostic credibility and to prevent more crimes against nature from industries that alter the surrounding areas near water sources. The government of Costa Rica should punish those responsible with large fines and sanctions, such as cleaning up the mess and replacing all the fish and shrimp and other flora and fauna damaged before their operating license is returned.
