Running Records Lesson Plan Rational Given a chapter book, the student will read a chapter a day during

ng reading time out loud to himself and answer comprehension questions that show that he understood the chapter. The student should be able to answer each question correctly. Grade 2nd Standards 1. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.1 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking. 2. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.2d Generalize learned spelling patterns when writing words Objective 1. Student will be able to improve the flow of his reading and answer the comprehension questions to the best of his understanding Procedure Engagement/ Anticipation Set:

o Show interest in this lesson and let the student know that he can do this! o Explain to them that this is how they can improve their skills and move on to higher reading levels Mentor- Teach and Model:

o The first day, sit with the student and show them exactly what they will be doing. o After each couple of pages, ask the student to think back about what is happening so far o This will help the student learn how to pay attention while reading o The next day, sit by the student, but have them do the work themselves

o The following day, the teacher will be able to walk around the class room, leaving him to complete the chapter on his own Guided Practice:

o Ask the student, How do you think you are doing? o Is this helping you practice reading out loud? o Are you becoming more comfortable with your reading skills? o Comfort them by saying, I can tell you are understand the material by looking at your comprehension answers, you are doing great! Independent Practice:

o Make sure the student continues over the time to keep reading o Once in a while he should read out loud to himself to remind him what its like o This will help him grow as a better reader

Materials o Chapter book and his level, with slight challenge o Comprehension questions for each chapter written out for student Assessments Student understands the book he is reading and is getting challenged at the same time DifferentiationIf the text is too easy for him, change to a higher reading level book and if the text is too hard for him, switch the book to a lower level for him
