Lesson Plan: Statistical Analysis and Real World models

Teacher name Subject Grade Level Time duration Materials needed Adam Curtis Algebra I 9th 45 Minutes SmartBoard Laptop Smartphone or Tablet AirServer App

Lesson Objective

Purpose of the lesson Activity

A.11 The student will collect and analyze data, determine the equation of the curve of best fit in order to make predictions, and solve real-world problems, using mathematical models. Mathematical models will include linear and quadratic functions. Students will be able to collect data for statistical analysis, project this data in a graph, and make predictions about the future of the data set. As students walk into class the teacher will ask how many pets each student has. The teacher will then instruct students to get their notes out from the previous day. (Notes on data collection, graphing, and the line of best fit) The teacher will then explain to the students the project they are about to complete. o To instruct the students, the teacher will use the Web 2.0 tool Alcula.com to put together a graph of the data collected upon the students arrival. o A clear connection must be made on the data and its relation to the line of best fit calculated by Alcula.com The teacher will inform the students that they have 20 minutes to complete the first part of the project. o The students will be working in groups of 2 and will be creating a statistical model with a set of real world data. o After collecting data, the students will use the linear regression model on the website: Alcula.com to project their data on a graph and find the line of best fit. o The students will then make a prediction into the future based on the line of best fit calculated on Alcula.com. After 20 minutes, the students will be presenting their data to the class. o To present, the teacher will use the AirServer app and film

Assessment

the students graph on the computer they used, which will project their project onto the SmartBoard. Students will be assessed on their presentation of the data in front of the class. A clear connection must be made between the data and the line of best fit, as well as an accurate prediction into the future.
