Lesson Plan Teaching a Rote Song Setting Zach Barker Elementary School Grade 3 National and State Standards

1.0 Singing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire or music 1.1 Sing melodies in varied modes with appropriate style, accurate pitch and rhythm. 1.2 Demonstrate the ability to sing expressively using proper vocal technique.

Standard 6.0 Listening and Analyzing 6.1 Demonstrate same and different sections of music through varying methods. 9.0 Students will understand music in relation to history and culture. 9.1 Classify and/or perform music of various cultures and historical periods.

Previous Knowledge Students have learned songs by rote from the teacher before Students can keep a steady beat Objectives: The learner will: Sing The Mocking Bird with accurate pitch and tempo Identify where Appalachian music originated Keep a steady beat while singing with and without the teacher Materials Needed: Singing voices Piano hands Procedures 1. Have students keep a steady beat while I sing The Mocking Bird 2. Ask students to listen closely as I will ask them questions after I sing it again 3. Ask students what two things do we know the mocking bird can do? 4. Ask if they know where the Appalachian mountains are located 5. I sing the first line and have students repeat the line after me. 6. I then sing the second line and have them repeat like the first, then sing first and second together. I do the same for the last two.

Assessments Informal assessment of singing is embedded throughout the lesson through group performance. Formal assessment of improvisation will occur through individual student performance. Students will be evaluated using a checklist. (see below)
