B7-0370/2014 Motion for a European Parliament resolution on open source software in the EU institutions The European Parliament, A. having regard to Rule 120 of its Rules of Procedure, having regard to the results of the Limu Project which began in 2006 in the municipality of Munich, which restructured its entire IT network with the ultimate aim of migrating from a Windows-based operating system to an open-source Linux environment; whereas, five years later, this had yielded a budget saving of EUR 4 million as a result of not having to renew the licences for Windows and related packages and of being able to re-use existing hardware; Calls on the Commission to carry out a careful study on the costs and benefits of a possible migration of the IT structure of the EU institutions from the current Windows-based one to one based on open source platforms.
