Special Points of Interest Literacy Scholarship Gala May 18, 2014 at the Barrett Station Community Center Executive Diva Jazmon Miller Womens Storybook Project Diva Spotlight! Ms. Tanya Eagleton
Oooh Girl! is excited about the month of May 2014! We will hold our 1st Annual Literacy Gala on May 18, 2014 at Barrett Station Community Center. A core value of our mission is literacy, so what better way to celebrate the importance of literacy and education than through a Book Scholarship! This scholarship will be given to five deserving high school seniors who have been accepted into a two year college, four year university or a technical school. This is a way of saying Keep up the Good Work! to those students that are actively pursuing a higher education with a future desire to give back to their community and exhibits selfless acts of kindness for others. In addition to the honoring our graduates, we will recognize pioneers of our community. Our theme is Todays Readers, Tomorrows Leaders! We will focus on our past, present and future. Our keynote speaker will be Mrs. Leona Jackson, a product of the Barrett Station community, strong advocate of education and member of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church. Currently Mrs. Jackson resides in Huffman, but is still very active in her childhood community. She has been in the field of education for over 30 years and we are delighted to be inspired by her message. We anticipate our Literacy Gala to be a huge success! Seating is limited, so purchase your ticket today so that you also may be a part of the Oooh Girl! Experience.
In the Community
Oooh Girl! founders attended the East Harris County Empowerment Councils 2014 Black Tie Gala on Saturday, March 29th and was excited to see the amazing turnout and show of support for this positive event. It was reassuring to know that so many individuals are interested in collaborating and making the community a better place. In addition to the Black Tie Gala, the Oooh Girl! Executive team participated in the Sisters Network Stop the Silence annual breast cancer walk. We put on our superhero capes and walked in memory of Rita Baby Arceneaux who was diagnosed with having breast cancer, breast cancer survivors and others who have lost the fight to this disease.

New Addition!
Jazmon Miller is Oooh Girl!s Executive Diva. Jazmon currently works in the restaurant industry but has a strong desire to be of service to others. She believes that our forefathers and those especially of the black community withstood, sacrificed and fought too hard for all of us and it is our duty to make the most of everyday and every experience. For nonbelievers, she feels that it is her duty to make them believe and guide them in a way that supports the notion that without an education, you are limiting yourself. Her standpoint on literacy is simple, if you cant read, you cannot live and thrive in todays world. She feels that it has been placed upon her heart to help those who lack motivation or those who lack the resources to succeed in todays world. Her immediate focus is to open young girls minds to the possibilities of the world and what better way to teach and inspire them, than through a literacy based program. We are pleased to have Ms. Miller join in the ranks of bringing about change to the world starting with girls!

Oooh Girl! would like to highlight Ms. Tanya Eagleton. Tanya is woman of purpose, spiritual solidness, and actively promotes education within the community, She embodies everything that an Oooh Girl! stands for! Ms. Eagleton grew up in The Barrett Station Community where she single handedly raised two children that are currently productive and God fearing citizens. As a professional cosmetologist, Tanya believes in hard work. Her work ethic has propelled her to be elected for the Crosby School Board, where she has served as Board Member, President, and Vice President. She is a member of the Texas Association of School Boards, National School Boards Association, and National Black Caucus of School Board Members. In addition, she serves as a member of the Community Advisory Board and Retired Teachers Association (Crosby Area). Tanya has been featured in the Baytown Sun for her role on the Crosby School Board. Tanyas purpose was refocused by God a few months ago when she learned she had Stage 3 Ovarian Cancer. As you may expect, this news came as a surprise; however, she has never feared nor waivered from her faith. As a child and through adulthood, Psalm 34:4 has carried Diva Eagleton through. It reads, I sought the Lord, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears. With the support of her church, Mt. Rose, family and sisterly friends, Diva Eagleton has been able to start treatment and even minister to other women facing the fight of cancer! This Diva has spent time researching and is currently participating in cancer research to help other Divas detect this form of cancer early. Diva Eagleton is a strong willed person who has focused on getting healthier because she knows her purpose has been made stronger by God. Diva Eagleton is arming herself to help strengthen the families within the community by reaching out to parents and directing them to resources. She strongly believes that we have to help the parents and mothers first. In addition, she will be bringing womens health awareness to the community and advocating for women to ask for ultrasounds and CAT scans when symptoms of illness wont diminish. You can see why Ms. Tanya Eagleton is featured in our Diva Spotlight! Please support our Diva as she boldly fights against Ovarian Cancer! We love you Diva and pray for a speedy recovery.
Oooh Girl! is a non-profit organization that brings about positive change within our community and the lives of our younger generation of women. We aspire to help girls reach their full potential educationally, spiritually, mentally and become health conscious in the process. We subscribe to the notion that it takes a village to raise a child, so each one of us has an obligation to administer assistance where needed.
