Nicole Hullfish 4/24/14 ELD-307: Dr. Casey Lesson Plan Guided Reading Lesson Plan

Rationale The purpose of this lesson is to work on phonics to teach the sound th and then listen to a child reading a book for a running record and have her write answers to a comprehension worksheet. Standards CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1 Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.3 Describe how characters in a story respond to major events and challenges. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.2.2 Recount or describe key ideas or details from a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.

Objective SWBAT recognize and use consonant diagraphs (clusters of two letters that make one). SWBAT use known words and word patterns to learn new words. SWBAT read with intonation, phrasing and pausing. SWBAT take words apart while reading for meaning using a flexible range of word-solving strategies. SWBAT initiate problem-solving actions while reading. SWBAT self correct while solving words and fix most errors. SWBAT understand a simple story problem and resolution. SWBAT use clues to predict that the baby bird is in a shell and will hatch.

Procedures (include teacher talk) Introduction: Hello, Sophia Im glad I am able to get to work with you today. Guess what? I know you enjoy doing running records so today we will eventually get to do one! Are you excited about that? But first we will have to work on your consonant diagraph chart, ok? So grab your glue stick and lets get started. I will now write on the chart the next section which will be where we will cover the sound th. I will then cut out the picture of a three which

I then have her glue down right below the writing of the th. Before we continue I will quickly go over the other 2 sections that she has already learned. So I will have her review the sh and ch sounds for me. Middle: Now I will have her say with me th. I may even ask her if she knows any words that begin with a th sound. If she has any we can say them together. After I think I will have her say the one which we glued down, three together. After this I will have her grab her pencil and I will have her write down the following words. The words are: Thick The Then That This There

After she writes them all with not much guidance from me other than my voice of how she may think they sound to write them out I will have her say them. I will point with my pencil and go down the section one by one. After this I will have her underline the diagraph in each of the words after this I will continue with the lesson. I will take away the chart and put that away. We will clean up and put away any of the objects that we wont need for the next part.

Now I will take out the book Baby Bird and tell her that this is the book that she will be reading for her running record. I will tell her to try her best and take her time while reading. But first I will hold the book and look through it with her. Say the title first then I might ask her what she thinks may happen in the book based off of the pictures seen on the pages. After we get to the end we will turn back to the beginning and get started. Normally this doesnt happen during a running record but I want to see if she can get a grasp of the book based just on the clues in pictures. I will then ask her to start with the title and then begin. This is where I will begin reading along with her on my running record paper which has the words on them. I will mark off any errors that she may make while reading. After she finishes I will count up the errors and then move on to the comprehension questions. I will first have her talk about what happened in the book. Hopefully she will recount the major events of the story. For example, Baby Bird is very little at the beginning of the story. He begins to grow. His beak, legs, and wings get bigger. Then, he is too big to fit in his egg. At the end, he pecks and cracks his egg, and his mom gives him a bug to eat. If needed I will prompt with, Tell what happens in the story, what else happens? Can you tell what grows on the bird? Then, what happens? What happens at the end? I will score her on her level of understanding with this first section which is the key understanding in the text. Now I will ask some questions which are beyond the text. The questions will be as follows with answers that she may answer with. Tell how you think the baby bird felt when he was growing in the egg. Why? The baby bird was crowded and seemed scared that he was going to run out of room. Tell when you realized that the bird was in an egg. Find what page. I will accept any reasonable response such as I

realized he was in an egg when he started pecking on page 13. How do you think he feels when he breaks out of the egg? Why? He is happy because he feels free and has space to move. Talk about why you think birds have strong beaks. Birds need their beaks to break out of their eggs. These would be the questions I would ask her. Now I would score her responses and then scoring them. If she scores 6-7 then she has excellent comprehension of this text. If I feel that the student is having trouble comprehending the text then I will take the liberty to go back in the text and go over any questions she missed and find the answer with her. If she had any fluency problems then I would go back and talk about some of the errors she made. Closure: After this will be the independent application where I will hand over the comprehension worksheet of questions I made for her about the story. I will go over each of the questions with her and remind her to try her best but also that she needs to write in complete sentences and also to start her sentences with a capital letter. I will say this last part because she sometimes forgets to capitalize. I saw this during the guided reading lesson I watched and also during the kid writing of hers. I will congratulate her for doing so well working with me and doing great on her running record and have her head back to her seat with her questions to answer at her seat. Hopefully there will be at least 15 minutes for her to complete them. This will be the conclusion. Hopefully at the end of the class I will collect her paper and grade it for accuracy. Assessments The assessment that will occur will be how well this student does on her running record. We will be seeing how well she does on fluency of the text and comprehension. Based on the findings of how well she does I will then work with her for a few minutes on what she had wrong and go over how the specific issue should be done correctly. Also I will be looking at how well she grasped the book by seeing what she writes to the comprehension questions. I will also be observing how she works throughout the entire guided reading lesson. Differentiation I will be differentiating the lesson to her ability level. She is on a G level so that is the books level for the running record. I will be making the comprehension sheet based on the instructions of my co-op teacher on what questions she thinks the student can handle and also that the student needs bigger line spacing to write her responses. My words will be differentiated based on how the student is responding to the lesson.

Sometimes this child does not want to work and says it is too hard so I will have to work around this if she does not want to cooperate. There will be nothing more that will be differentiated for this child during this guided reading. But, since she is the only one on this level I will have to base my lesson to adjust the guided reading for just one child instead of a few. Technology links The only technology links used would be a reference to the running record and worksheet that are provided from the Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy Intervention. Future Connections (ideas for where this may lead to additional opportunities for instruction) The outcome for this students running record will let my co-op teacher see if she can soon move on to the next level which is H. Also during her next guided reading lesson my co-op teacher will probably work on more with her diagraph chart with the next sound being wh. She also may work with her on letter work with the pattern ate--. These would be hopefully included in her next session with this student. Also if the student has any trouble with fluency or comprehension or something else during her running record I would inform my co-op teacher so she could work on that with her as well during the students next lesson.
