Unit Plan: Me on Mapping

Submitted By: Staci Gengler

Unit Plan: Reflection Page

1. Where did you get the ideas and materials for this unit plan? Include website names, URLs, book titles and authors.
This entire unit came out of our book Integrating Language Arts and Social Studies, for strategy 7 on page 49 and strategy 25 on page 180. I used the books they suggest to incorporate Literacy and information, and then I used the activities on a different day to give the students an authentic hand on approach to the standards of mapping. I did expand on the school walk to allow student to give and follow directions to a specific destination to finish up the unit; I called it an Adventure Walk.

2. What were the easiest and most challenging parts of writing this unit plan? The most challenging part at first was deciding what was going to be my second strategy to use. But once I found the compare and contrast maps strategy everything fell into place. I feel the students begin the unit with two days of instruction and information and then have three days of implementing their new knowledge.

3. What suggestions do you have for yourself for the next time you write unit plans? Next time I would suggest getting all of my materials gathered first and make reservations for books that I need from the library far in advance instead of waiting till the week of.
