PROJECT 1

precedent study_gehry residence the gehry residence, designed by frank gehry in 1978 and remodeled again by him in the 1990s, represents an important step in gehrys career as his first exploration with deconstructivist architecture. this project examines how the gehry residence responds to the context of a typical, dense santa monica neighborhood by leaving the original bungalow intact beneath the addition, allowing certain cinemagraphic views into the house, and adding landscape for increased privacy.

from 2D to 3D and back again_watt hall skylight this project involved measuring, drawing, and modeling an existing site, studying origami as a form generator, and combining all of the information into a skylight project. the context of this skylight is the northeastern fire stair of watt hall, creating design constraints such as references to the style of the original building, existing structural elements, and light conditions within and outside of the stairwell.

slanguage_community art center on sunset slanguage is an organization founded by artists on the principle of bringing the art world and the general community together, with an emphasis on educating children in the arts. this site-specific project is located on historic sunset boulevard in a strip of commercial zone surrounded by dense residential properties. the concept for the project was based on a precedent study (house crane by atelier bow-wow), the form was generated from a pattern found on site, and the building was oriented to encourage pedestrian access by extending the existing crosswalk.
