PROBLEM SET 01: Classical Mechanics: PHYS 311; Fall 2013; 20 X 5

1) Use Lagrangian Equation of Motion of 2 kind to show that Homogeneity of Time leads to Conservation of Total Mechanical Energy for closed, conservative systems where the Kinetic energy is quadratic function of velocities. [Consult Laudau & Lifshitz, Ch 2] nd 2) Use Lagrangian Equation of Motion of 2 kind to show that Homogeneity of space leads to conservation of linear momentum for closed systems. [Consult Laudau & Lifshitz, Ch 2] nd 3) Use Lagrangian Equation of Motion of 2 kind to show that Isotropy of space leads to conservation of angular momentum for closed systems. [Consult Laudau & Lifshitz, Ch 2] 4) Consider a particle of mass m. This particle is constrained to move down on the inner surface of vertical cone from its rim towards its tip. Assume that the tip of the cone is at (x=0, y=0,z=0) and its rim at a height of z=Z. Also assume that the semi-angle of the cone is . Write down the equation of constraints and find the generalized coordinates. Then write the Lagrangian and find out the equation of motion. 5) Prove that the total time derivative of any differentiable function of position and time can always be added with any Lagrangian such that the equation of motion remain unchanged. How the following quantities
