IMPROVEMENTS TCITHE NSWC AERODYNAMICS PREDICTION PROGFUM OF PART~CULAR

SIGNIFICANCE FOR BOMBS L.M. Sheppard

S U M M A R Y During use of the NSWG missile aerodynamics predictibn program, a number of deficiencies have been found. ~ecauke these defnciencies are important on bombs, simple hilt effective corrections have been devised. Details are given bf a revised expression for boattail normal force at subsonic a 1 1 d 4s transonic speeds. This is necessary because the program giv~ r normal force results that are much too large in magnitude whtfn the base diameter is small. Also included is a correction fDr boattail centre of pressure. In order to cope with fuses and lugs on bombs, allowanctk?s have been devised for truncated nose viscous separatibn pressure drag at subsonic and transonic speeds, and far excrescence drag at all speeds. The program includes Bn allowance for viscous separation drag at the nose shoulder, at transonic speeds. Finally, a correction has been included bo account for the wave drag due to large amounts of nose blunting, including the region near the drag-rise Mach number. Comparisons are made with experimental data from a number of sources, in order to show that the modified program is effective and useful. Approved for Public Release
