How did it evolve?
During the 1970’s and 80’s Aparthied was reinvented- a result of increasing
internal and international pressures, and worsening economic difficulties
Why did it evolve?
Mostly the African citizens, it was mostly supported by the Afrikaans newspaper
and Afrikaner cultural movements such as the Afrikaner Broederbond.

Alan Paton became by first starting to write books and
novels like “cry, the beloved country”.
He believe that just like in his book he could have a
chance to change the lives of young blacks of the Xhosa
ethnic group. That is mostly why he evolved.

Alan Paton wrote this novel because during the time
when he was writing this novel, things were going on in
Africa with the kids and he wanted to help them. And
that is what his story was about.
