School: Bridgeview Elementary.

Grade/Subject: Second.

Unit Topic: Magnets.

Lesson Topic: Science- Magnetic force and motion.

Lesson 1, Lesson 2, or Lesson 3?

Lesson 2- technology lesson.

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES/ STUDENT OUTCOMES

1. Students will demonstrate the strength of magnetic force by using a magnet and
other objects.

WV CSOS
SC.O.2.1.5 manipulate scientific instruments and everyday materials to investigate the natural
world (e.g., hand lens, balance, thermometer, metric ruler, magnets, weather instruments, or
calculators).
SC.O.2.2.7 demonstrate that a magnet can attract or repel objects.

NATIONAL STANDARDS
N/A

MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK
Overall Time- 45 Minutes
Time Frame- 5 minute flip lesson and questioning
5 minute teacher and student discussion
20 minute work in pairs
5 minute demonstration of paper clip floating in air
5 minute work independently making paper clip float in air
5 minute unit post-test and answer questions

STRATEGIES
Teacher/student led discussion, cooperative groups, discovery learning.
DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ ADAPTATIONS/ INTERVENTIONS
(Learning Styles, Students with Special Needs, Cultural Differences, ELL)

Auditory Learners: Discussion and flip lesson.
Visual Learners: Recording data and demonstrations.
Kinesthetic Learners: Hands on activity.

PROCEDURES: Introduction/ Lesson Set

Flip lesson and ask questions to promote student learning.
Give each student a piece of paper, a paperclip and a magnet.
Challenge students to use the magnet to move the paper clip without touching it.
Ask students if they were able to do that and why.

PROCEDURES: Body & Transitions

Introduce focus question.
Split the students into pairs.
Give each student a magnet and each group a bag of test objects.
Monitor students as they test to see if a magnet can attract iron (the paperclip) through other
materials.
If students are stumped, ask them questions.
Have the students share their results about their data they collected.
Demonstration showing a magnet using magnetic force to keep a paper clip floating in air.

PROCEDURES: Closure

Allow time for questions.
Students answer focus question.

ASSESSMENT: Diagnostic

Questioning at beginning of lesson.

ASSESSMENT: Formative

Walking around while students are testing to see if the magnets attract objects through other materials.

ASSESSMENT: Summative

Students will answer a focus question.

MATERIALS
2 Magnets per group
1 Bag of test objects per group
Observation sheet for everyone
2 paper clips per group
2 pieces of paper per group
String tied to each paper clip

EXTENDED ACTIVITIES
If Student Finishes Early The student can test objects in their desk to see if they are magnetic through
other materials.
If Lesson Finishes Early The students can share what they wrote down for their focus questions.
If Technology Fails Talk about what was in the flip lesson.

POST-TEACHING
Reflections:
The lesson started out by me questioning the students about what they learned in the previous lesson
and what they were going to learn in this lesson, so we discussed back and forth. Then the students did
first experiment, moving the paper clip without touching it. The students were able to do this. Then the
students worked in pairs testing through materials, and they did well with this. The last experiment the
students made a paper clip float in the air. One little boy had trouble getting his to work, and he began
to cry. The teacher said she didnt even notice. I just went over to him and worked with him one-on-one
and he was fine. I just wasnt expecting that to happen. I put on the lesson plan at first 35 minutes, but it
actually took 45 minutes.
Data Based Decision Making
For the diagnostic assessment, I questioned the students at the beginning of the lesson.
For the formative assessment, I walked around and made sure each student could do/were participating
in the experiment.
For the summative assessment, students answered a focus question.
17/24 students answered the focus question correctly.
