Scatter plots
George! What the heck is a scatter plot?????
A SCATTER PLOT shows
relationships between two sets
of data
Scatter plots
Monkeys in George’s clan took a math exam.
Each monkey studied for different amounts of
time. Here are the results of their exams.
Scatter plots
What can we tell from this scatter plot about
the relationship between the # of hours
studied and the scores on exams?

The longer each

monkey studied, the
better they did on the
exam.
Correlation
Correlation describes the
type of relationship
between two data sets.
There are 3 types of
correlation.
Positive correlation
Positive correlation is when one set of data
goes up the other set of data goes up.
Negative correlation
Negative correlation is when one data set
goes up (increases), the other goes down
(decreases).
No correlation
No correlation is when changes in one set of
data does not effect the other.
Strong and Weak
correlation
With positive and negative correlation, you
also can have strong and weak
correlation.
Line of best fit
The LINE OF BEST FIT is the line that comes
closest to all the points on a scatter plot.
Identify the correlation of
data
The diameter of a pizza and the price of the pizza.
Positive. As the diameter gets bigger the price goes up.
A person’s age and their number of siblings.
No correlation. One does not effect the other.
The temperature outside and the number of people
wearing coats.
Negative. As one goes up the other goes down.
Temperature goes up, # of coats goes down.
Temperature goes down, # of coats goes up.
