The election of President Lincoln in 1860
threatened the economic interests of the
Southern states (Agriculture)
On April 12, 1861 the Civil War began in Fort
Sumter, South Carolina
The 11 Confederate States were
Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina,
Tennessee, Georgia, Mississippi,
Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Texas and
Louisiana
Population 9 million (3 million were slaves)
The President of the Confederate States was
Jefferson Davis
The 23 Union States had a population of 22
million people (none of which were slaves)
The President of the Union States was
Abraham Lincoln
On July 21, 1861 the Union and the
Confederates met at the Battle of Bull Run
(Fairfax and Prince William Counties, VA)
Confederates Won
On July 1, 1863 the Union and the
Confederates met at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Union Won
Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address on
November 19, 1863, at the dedication of the
Soldiers' National Cemetery four and a half
months after the battle
President Lincoln was assassinated on April
14, 1865, 12-days before the final surrender of
the Confederacy
