GUITAR (Subject Code: 07)

a This syllabus provides an option for Grades 1 and 2 candidates to offer either the traditional form of
harmonic solo pieces or up to two of three pieces which concentrate on a melodic line, accompanied by
either guitar or piano. There is also an option in Grades 68 for candidates to offer some appropriate
concerto movements, accompanied by piano.
b This syllabus is only appropriate for the standard classical instrument tted with nylon and covered nylon
strings.
c Candidates in all grades must tune their own instrument. The examiner will not do so.
d Candidates should provide themselves with a footstool and music stand if required.
e Schedule of maximum marks for all grades:
Scales and Arpeggios 21
Pieces: 1 30
Pieces: 2 30
Pieces: 3 30
Playing at Sight 21
Aural Tests 18
Total 150
f Accurate tuning of the instrument, volume, clarity and quality of tone, posture and hand positions
will all be taken into account in the marking of pieces and studies, scales and arpeggios.
g Scales and arpeggios should be played from memory, at a pace appropriate to the technical demands of
the grade. In all grades, scales and arpeggios should be played legato, and without undue accentuation.
Right-hand ngerings will be specied by the examiner for scales only (not arpeggios), but any practical,
systematic left-hand ngering will be accepted.
h Candidates are not compelled to adhere to the ngering indicated in any of the pieces: any good practical
ngering will be accepted.
i Candidates should use their discretion in the choice of pieces in order to present a contrasted and balanced
programme.
j Candidates should have acquired some skill in vibrato by Grade 6.
k Candidates will be given a short interval of up to half a minute in which to look through and, if they wish,
try out any part of the test for Playing at Sight before they are required to perform it for assessment.
Prep Test. Information about this test, designed as a preparation for the Grade 1 examination and to
encourage the building of good musical and technical foundations, is contained in a separate leaet. The test,
lasting approximately 10 minutes, takes the form of a positive assessment with no marks or a pass or fail
result. Acerticate, incorporating the examiners written report, is presented to the candidate at the end of the
assessment. The three tunes, a choice of set pieces and examples of the listening games which comprise the
material used for the assessment are published by ABRSMPublishing in Guitar Prep Test.
