Mentor: Coach Wester Campus/District: Mesquite Date: 1-27-14 Overall Goal of Lesson: The student should be able to recognize proper technique and methods of improving skills and the fundamental skills needed for participation in basketball. The student should be able to perform fundamental basketball skills.
Instructional Objectives: Discuss basic passing, dribbling, and shooting techniques. Lead students in activities to improve shooting, passing, dribbling, cutting, give and go, screening, and pick and roll. Emphasize that the primary function is to make sure students are getting a good shot at the basket. Have students demonstrate each skill and explain when it is most effective and why. Lead students in activities to improve 1 on 1 skills, trapping, blocking, rebounding and zone and man fundamentals.
Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) & ELPS: 116.56.(c).(2) Movement skills. The student applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills. (D) identify correctly the critical elements for successful performance within the context of the activity Key Vocabulary: Dribble, blocking, rebounding, trapping, BEEF, triple threat Higher Order Questions: What does the acronym BEEF stand for? Student Activities: (Keep in mind the following: Scaffolding, Independent or Cooperative activities, Groupings, Reading, Writing, Listening, Hands-On/Minds-On, Connections to previous knowledge, etc) Cooperative learning, listening, hands-on Modifications/ELL Strategies Go at slower speeds as needed and use both hands if needed to gain skill Anticipatory Activity for Lesson: Journal Lesson-What are the three passes that we use in basketball? Time Allotted 125 min Teacher Input/Lesson Activity: Journal Entry (10 min), dress out and meet in the small gym (20 min), Warm-up and stretch (10 min), basketball skills (45) Modeling: Teacher will demonstrate each basketball skill and build on the fundamentals (10 min). Guided Practice: Teacher will ask the students to join him while he continues to guide student about each basketball skills movement.(5 min)
Independent Practice: Students will go through each movement of basketball skills training as teacher calls the skill to be practiced. (45 min) Lesson Closure: Cool down and stretch. Ask the group why we fake it, to make it? Students dress back into school attire (20 min). Assessment Methods/Strategies: Teacher will visually asses each student as they perform the skills they are tasked with. Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.): Gym and Basketballs
