Does education and sensitivity training

for nurses impact homeless patients

experience in the acute care setting?
Abigail OBrien
Importance to Nursing
*The homeless population does
not have accessible primary or
preventative care.
*Emergency room (ER) treatment
is primary care for the homeless.
*Frequent visits to ER decrease
resources available to triage
appropriately.
*The proposed research study
will bring awareness to quality
care for the homeless

Issue
Nurses may view homeless
patients negatively because they
lack education and sensitivity
training to provide empathetic
care.

A Quantitative Research Study
*After nurses receive education and
sensitivity training homeless patients
receive a survey to complete
* On a scale of 0-5 0 meaning the worst
experience ever, 5 being the best
experience ever, with 3 being
indifferent rate: how the nurse provided
comforting techniques, active listening,
performed technical skills, offered
support or outside resources, and overall
demeanor over the course of six months.

Limitations
*Defining homeless
*Some patients may be
incapable of
completing survey
(illiterate)
*Frequent
Flyer/small sample
size
*Subjective
