3. Explain what Wiesel means when he writes: The doors clanked shut. We had fallen into the trap, up
to our necks. The doors were nailed, the way back irrevocably cut off. The world had become a
hermetically sealed cattle car.
What was the trap? What happened to their world?

4. Who is Mrs. Schaechter? Describe her behavior in the cattle car. Why does it seem as though she
were possessed by an evil spirit? What theme does Mrs. Schaechters behavior develop?
