Explain to the class that they will be making text to self-connections during the read aloud when prompted (read aloud Apple Pie 4th of July by Janet S Wong 2. Call students attention to write a text to self- connection on their post-its after reading the following pages. (p. 3, 14, 21) 3. Identify & discuss some of the traditions discussed in the story a. 4. Introduce vocabulary (parade, chow mein, event) H. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will have the students complete a ticket out the door with their answers to list of questions on the board. (see attached) Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must correctly tell why/what important events, people and/or customs are marked by the holiday (Fourth of July) in the story. I. Closure: Brief discussion about why and what other important events, people and/or customs are marked by holidays. J. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part to teach will be explain the vocabulary words 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the part of the lesson most challenging to teach would be getting the students to understand why important events, people and/or customs are marked by holidays. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? For a follow up lesson I would have the students list the activities their families do on a certain holiday and share it with the whole class. 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students who do not understand the lesson, I would review the main idea of the story again and ask the students why their families do certain activities on certain holidays. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? The part of the lesson I would change is giving the students the option to make text to text connections if they do not have self-connections to certain holidays.
