STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

My four years of undergraduate studies in CS at PSG College of

Technology, Coimbatore and my exposure and penchant for research have
made the choice of further study, for me, an obvious one. My goal is to
pursue a career in research, either in industry or in academia. Ten
years from now, envisage myself as a full!fledged research
professional in an organi"ation, or a faculty member at one of the
leading universities. The first step towards my ob#ective would be to
pursue Masters Program in Computer Science. My ultimate degree
ob#ective would however be a Ph.$.
Throughout my student career have been a top ran%ing student. was
in the top &.&'( of all engineering aspirants in my state, which
secured me a place in PSG College of Technology! one of the premier
institutions in ndia. have done #ustice to my potential by
contributing notably to the research wor%s in our college as well as
maintaining my academic ran% within the top '( of the students in my
class.
)ver the past two years, my li%ing for research has burgeoned
especially in the fields of security and distributed computing.
started by studying various information hiding techni*ues. +fter
extensive literature survey in the fields of Steganography and
,atermar%ing, published my own techni*ue for efficient information
hiding in low resolution images using -ewtons .orward $ifference in
Springer!/erlag 0-CS. have also wor%ed with watermar%ing techni*ues
especially audio watermar%ing and echo hiding and my paper titled 1A
Novel Embedding System For Efficient Watermarking In Auido In Echo2
tests the fitness of the -.$ Techni*ue in this field of research.
used the -.$ Techni*ue to compress uncorrelated frames in a video file
by establishing a relationship by generating a Correlation polynomial.
This proposal was well acclaimed when presented in the nternational
Conference of 3uman Machine4s nterface 5C3M &67 at ndian nstitute
of Science 5Sc 8angalore7.
Two of my courses $istributed Component +rchitecture and Client Server
Computing interested me a lot. was very %een on doing some research
wor% in these areas and devoted *uality time towards an in!depth
understanding of these sub#ects and tried to implement my own ideas in
these fields.
My urge and potential for research was identified and was chosen to
lead the team for a research pro#ect, 1Code Optimisation in iddle!are"
based #istributed Embedded Systems2. ,e built a security framewor% for
C)98+ : based applications providing ; security services, which
includes authentication, authori"ation, non!repudiation, data
integrity, auditing and security while transmission. ,e designed a <=>!
bit symmetric %ey crypto algorithm G! M+P to be used in all the
security services. $uring the course of the pro#ect, had the
opportunity to design an -!tier for the distributed nature of the
framewor% and implement them in #ava. )ur originality and substantial
wor% in the pro#ect was appropriately recogni"ed and the pro#ect was
given ?The 8est Pro#ect +ward4, in the department.
My academic pursuits have not however, prevented me from participating
with interest in various co!curricular activities including organi"ing
seminars and serving as representative of the class. These activities
have led to the development of a multifaceted personality and have
e*uipped me with strong interpersonal s%ills. My academic achievements,
research wor% and inter personal s%ills were well ac%nowledged and
was given the ?8est outgoing student4 award in our batch.

am currently wor%ing with Computer +ssociates and am wor%ing on the
pro#ect 1Security and $evice Management of Smart phones2. +part from
managing smart phones, this pro#ect deals with designing security
policies for them and implementing the same using @ava technologies. My
wor% spans across all the tiers of the pro#ect, which includes building
the GA using @ST0 and @S., implementing the business logic using
Bnterprise @ava 8eans and designing the database using SC0 Server.
f admitted plan to carry on with my advanced studies in the fields
of security and distributed computing systems. Considering the
pioneering wor% going on at your department labs $istributed Systems
Software 0ab 5$SS07 and nformation Systems Security 0ab 5MSS07, which
perfectly match with the field of my interest, computer science
department at Aniversity of Maryland, is the ideal choice for an
exciting research career. +t the same time, am confident of
contributing originally to the ongoing wor% at your department. 8y
