Strategy # 26

Cooperative Learning
Jigsaw
Basics:
Time Allotted 15- 45minutes
Room Arrangement Groups of 4
Materials Paper, Prompts
Process Directions:
1. Students begin in home groups of 4 or 5 members.
2. In the home groups, students will receive a number.
3. Study topics will be assigned to each team member of the home groups.
4. The home groups will split in to expert groups where each member joins members with
the same study topic from the other home groups.
5. In the expert group, the members research their topic and work together to prepare a
presentation.
6. Students return to their home groups where they each present the information found in
their expert group.
When:
Large amount of material to be covered.
Need to increase retention of information
Example:
When students are learning about the number system and the different groups of numbers
such as real numbers, complex numbers, etc., each group could cover a different
classification of numbers to teach to their home team.
