Standard 7 Reflection

Standard 7: Collaboration
The seventh CEC standard states that Special Education teachers will collaborate with
other teachers and other members of the students life. Another key point of standard seven is
that beginning special education professionals use collaboration to promote the well-being of
individuals with exceptionalities across a wide range of settings and collaborators. The artifact
that I have chosen to put in my portfolio is an IEP agenda that I helped to create. I worked with
Mrs. Kaup, on creating an IEP agenda for a student.
Working with another teacher on an IEP was a great experience for me. I was able to see
how a teacher who has been teaching for a number of years creates their IEP agenda. When
working on this together Mrs. Kaup would ask me for my thoughts on what she was writing
about the student. For example when it came to talking about the student strengths we took the
feedback we received from the students other teachers as well as what we had been seeing from
this student in class.
Mrs. Kaup also walked me through the graph making process in the SRS, even though
the SRS with be different next year, it was nice to see how she plotted the students progress. To
create the math chart we used MBSP scores to show where the student is at based on a timed test
of basic math problems. To create the reading comprehension chart we used scores obtained
from the AIMS reading comprehension test. Then we created the writing chart by collecting data
from writing samples from the student after the student had been given a prompt and time to
write about the prompt.
Throughout this experience I learned a lot, I learned how to take the progress monitoring
data and turn it into visual graphs. I also learned how to work collaboratively with a teacher on
something that is normally done alone. It was very nice to see how a teacher other than my
cooperating teacher creates an IEP. There were some similarities, but some differences. For
instance my cooperating teacher doesnt get as technical with the graphing as Mrs. Kaup does. I
think that Im going to find myself in the middle of the two styles. I want my graph to be
informative, but also be something that the parents can easily decode and understand. This
experience has really helped me figure out how I am going to create my IEP agenda when I
become a teacher.
