POWER
WHAT IS POWER?
 Power is the rate at which work is done or the
amount of done in a unit of time
 Power is calculated by dividing the amount of

work done by the mount of time taken to do the


work
Power = Work/Time
Power = Force X Distance / Time
Power is measured in Watts (Joules/seconds)
A crane lifts an 8,000 N beam 75 m to
the top of a building in 30 s.
How much power does the crane use?
Power = Force X Distance

Power = 8,000N X 75m

= 20,000 W or 20 kW
HORSEPOWER
 Power of automobiles is measured by horsepower
instead of the watt
 1 horsepower = 746 watts
 Comparison was made between the power of
horses and a steam engine
